Four Popular Orchids And How To Care For Them

I remember hearing and reading about how easy caring for orchids is while my first orchids were slowly dying. Well, with a little experience, I am here to tell you the truth. My feeling is that it is simple, but sometimes not easy. It just takes some attention to detail and a knowledge of what type of orchid you are growing. You cannot just take your vanda and put it in the same place as your healthy phal. Some orchids' needs are different enough to require a different amount of light or water. But if you concentrate on four basic elements, you can give your orchid the care it needs. These four elements are light, water, temperature and fertilizer. All you need to do is adjust the amounts of these four elements for a particular orchid type.

Luckily, most orchids have some common preferences. Most of the popular orchids prefer a humid environment. You can accomplish this by putting a layer of small rocks in a tray and put water in the tray to almost the top of the rocks. Now place your potted orchid on the rocks, making sure the roots are not soaking in the water. Also make sure that there is good air circulation around your orchid. To give most orchids enough light without overdoing it, east facing windows often work great. Some may prefer more light, but rarely do they like direct sunlight.

It should be reassuring that orchids grow naturally all over the world. So be assured that there is a correct combination of these four elements with which your particular orchid will thrive. Dendrobium Orchids

Dendrobiums are one of the easiest and therefore most popular orchids. Your Dendrobium does better with moderate light. Water it every week or 2. They like even moisture when in the growing phase, but refer to dry out some when they are more dormant. Keep the temperature between 50 and 70, and feed it once a month.

Phalaenopsis Orchids

Another well liked orchid, it is often one which people get as their first orchid, e.g., the white moth orchid. These grow naturally in the tropical areas of Asia, and what makes them popular is the variety of colors and their longer bloom times. the tropical regions of Asia, it comes in several colors and is one of the longest blooming orchids. Most Phalaenopsis like low light conditions. Phalaenopsis need more water than other orchids, since it does not have pseudobulbs that can store water. They do better when kept constantly moist, but not soaking wet. Ideal temperature range is 50 to 75F.

Cymbidium Orchids

Cymbidiums are increasing in popularity, and again, this is partly do with how easy they are to grow. They do well in brilliant lighting, and they can even prosper outside if the temperatures are not too severe. Cymbidiums like to be consistently damp, but do not soak them. Avoid direct sun, as this can burn the leaves. This is one more orchid that prefers temps between 50 and 70F, although you can get more blooms by trying to keep the temperature on the lower end of the range.

Cattleya Orchids

Another orchid that comes in a range of colors, some Cattleya orchids have contrasting stripes and other designs. There are probably more hybrids of Cattleya than almost every other variety of orchid. They prefer brilliant, but again indirect light. Their leaves will be brighter green if they are getting adequate light. Water well when they are in their growth phase, but cut back when flowers start emerging. Allow the plant's roots dry out in between waterings. Can you guess the ideal temperature? Right, 50 to 70F. See you know a lot already!

Don’t just choose any guide though. Before you buy, assess your options first. Moreover, you also need to evaluate your skill level. Are you an absolute beginner who has never even held a brush or do you have some background in painting? You will find it easier to pick the best guide when you’ve answered this question.

There are some general points that real starters should look into to learn how to paint. Before even starting, beginners need to be taught first how to prepare the canvas; what other painting surfaces can be used; what brushes and other tools can be used for coloring; and how brushes should be cared for and preserved.

For learners who know more than absolute beginners, manuals should give additional inputs. These include appropriate color choice, perspective, paint thinning, picture composition, brush methods and the use of light. If you are already an expert with watercolors, make sure you look for an instructional book that offers more learning insights on pastel and oil.

There are no real restrictions on who can learn art. Even if you and everyone else think you have no talent, you can become a true artist. What you really need to do first is to look for the right resources to work with.
